About Golden Vertebr(a)e

Golden Vertebr(a)e is a portfolio by me, Ava Johnson, showcasing my work from my past years in the graphic design program at Colorado Mesa University. I grew up in Fort Collins in a family of four, I’m lover of music and films. Art movements like brutalism and Dadaism really interest me because of their historical and political contexts. I love when things make a statement, whether it’s in your face or very subtle in the design.

Where did Golden Vertebr(a)e come from you may ask? I choose gold because of the myth of King Midas, which had the curse of everything he touches becoming gold. Even though he saw this as a blessing, it was really a curse in disguise. Vertebre originally stemed from the fact I have scoliosis and how I’ve learned to embrace my condition. The missing “a” from my portfolio was truly just a mistake on my part and I just embraced it as a quirk to me.
